Separate laundry rooms used to be a common feature in New Zealand homes. But more recently, especially in space-efficient townhouses and apartments, laundry appliances have been relegated to kitchens, bathrooms, and cupboards in an effort to maximise living space. However, losing the separate laundry could be considered a downgrade.
If you’re planning a renovation or new home build, don’t overlook the benefits of giving your washer and drier their own room – or sprucing up the one you already have.
More storage
There are very few homeowners who haven’t wished for more storage at some point. A dedicated laundry room can provide a place to store bed linens and towels, buckets and mops, ironing boards and irons, clothes washing powders and liquids, as well as all your household cleaning supplies. This declutters other parts of your house and provides more space for the things that belong there – food, crockery, and cookware in the kitchen, clothes in the bedrooms, and personal care items in the bathrooms.
Tidier house
A laundry room is a fantastic place to install some slide-out hampers where everyone can toss their dirty laundry. If you have more than one hamper, you can pre-sort the laundry into colours and delicates, for example. Extra laundry space also solves the perennial issue of where to put the clean washing between the time you bring it in from the clothesline (or out of the dryer) and when you have time to fold it. Some bench space is a great idea so you have room to fold clothes quickly and neatly.
Less noise
Modern appliances are usually quieter than their old counterparts, but a 1400 rpm spin cycle is still far from silent. If your washing machine is in the kitchen or bathroom, it’s likely to create noise in the living or sleeping areas, whereas a dedicated laundry room can be tucked away further from the main living spaces.
Easier
Having a dedicated area where you can toss dirty laundry, wash it, dry it, fold it, and store much of it makes the whole task more streamlined and pleasant.
Increased property value
Having an attractive, functional, well-designed laundry improves the liveability of your property, making it more desirable to prospective buyers.
