Do you hate folding clothes? After you get them off the line or out of the dryer, do they sit in a laundry basket getting wrinkled? Or are you looking for a neater way to fold your laundry so it’s easier to store efficiently?
Thankfully, the internet is full of great tutorials to help you get your washing neatly folded and your drawers and closets organised. Here are some great tips for folding everything from socks to fitted sheets.
The Marie Kondo fold
Famous for her ability to declutter and tidy, Japanese author Marie Kondo has a folding method that you can apply to any item of clothing. In this video, she demonstrates how to fold tops, pants, and shorts so that they stand neatly by themselves in a drawer.
The DIY folding board
Folding boards are what retail stores use to get their display stock perfectly folded to a uniform size. They are extremely quick and easy to use – simply lay your garment on the board and then flip the panels inwards, one by one. That’s why they are extremely popular with parents who want to teach their kids to fold their own clothes! You can normally buy plastic models for under $10, but you can also make one for free using a thick cardboard box. This video shows you how.
The fitted sheet
Fitted sheets must be one of the most challenging laundry items to fold since the entire outer edge is gathered on an elastic band. This video tutorial shows a popular folding method of tucking the corners into each other before folding the sheet. It takes a bit of practice, but once you get the hang of it, storing your fitted sheets in a screwed-up ball will be a thing of the past!
Before folding your clothes using any of these methods, don’t forget to check that they are completely dry. Otherwise, they’ll smell musty and could develop mildew spots. Popping everything in the dryer for five minutes after you take it off the washing line can help to eliminate the last traces of moisture.
